Thermal injury is a devastating injury, not only for the immediate concern of risk of loss of life and extreme pain, but in the long term cosmetic and functional issues. As a means of improving the treatment and outcomes of these patients, the Burns Unit at RBWH, one of the largest in Australia, has instituted a large number of studies investigating initial cardiac function, management of pain, antibiotic efficacy, nutrition issues, exercise post burns, prevention of heterotopic ossificans.  With increased collaboration with other burns units in Australia, improvement in both the survival and health outcomes of burns patients will be achieved.
