Suzanne is a post-doctoral fellow working on a project to replace the standard, highly invasive blood-taking techniques with an innovative sampling approach that enables the measurement of antibiotics in a drop of blood. This new approach to sampling will be applied to strategic pharmacokinetic studies to characterise the behaviour of antibiotics that are vital for the treatment of critically ill children. Optimised antibiotic doses will be designed by performing a pharmacometric analysis, with doses able to be adjusted based on the individual circumstances of each child. This research will provide an advanced treatment of infection, resulting in better patient outcomes and reduction in the emergence of antibiotic resistant 'superbugs'.
