HEALTHY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GASTRIC ULTRASOUND STUDY
Investigators: Dr Steve O’Donoghue
Dr Rebecca Roach
Researchers in the ICU at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) are seeking volunteers for gastric ultrasound training. This training is part one of a two part study, whereby Intensive care doctors will undergo training to ensure they have adequate skills to accurately determine residual gastric content and volume. Part two involves ICU patients.
Gastric Ultrasound assessments will be carried out with volunteers assessed on 2 separate occasions, on the 3rd and 4th December (weekend) at designated times between 0700 and 1200. Each assessor will ultrasound each volunteer after a 4 hour fasting period and then after the volunteer drinks a volume of Up & Go breakfast drink. Volunteers will have 8 gastric ultrasounds preformed on each day. It is estimated that each ultrasound assessment session will be approximately 30 minutes. This project will be done in the Anaesthetic Department at the RBWH. Volunteers will be required to attend both days.
Volunteers will need to meet the following criteria:
- Age > 18 years
- Fasted for 4 hours
- Weight <110kg
- Not pregnant
- No history of upper abdominal pathology e.g. large hiatus hernia
- No Diabetes Mellitus
