Team BTCC Bridge To Brisbane

Put on your running or walking shoes and join Team BTCC in raising essential research funds for critically ill adults, newborns and burns patients at the Bridge to Brisbane on Sunday, August 25, 2019.

The Burns Trauma & Critical Care Research Centre (BTCCRC) researchers, are working hard to further increase survival rates by consistently improving methods for treating critically-ill adults and babies. The tragedy of the Bali bombings, which saw many of the victims flown to RBWH for treatment, highlighted the need for intense research into burns and trauma care. This was the impetus behind the establishment of the BTCCRC in 2004.

Today, BTCCRC have several important research projects that are either in progress or in the preliminary stages which require additional funding in order to continue or get underway.

Current research projects include:

  • Getting the right dose of antibiotics into critically ill babies and children at the Qld Children's Hospital intensive care unit.
  • Antibiotic ‘superdosing’ for intensive care patients at critical infection times to improve survival rates  - an approach that has already saved the lives and accelerated the recoveries of burns patients such as Toowoomba's Paris Turkington and celebrity chef Matt Golinski;
  • New and/or improved procedures for anaesthetising critically ill patients;
  • New tools for diagnosing infection early in burns and critically ill patients to start treatment sooner than later
  • Improving the scarring and contractures left after a major burn
  • Improving health outcomes for burns patients who suffer many health issues post-burns
